7.     What Is Difference Between A Subject, Course And Module?

Some of the words we use the describe what you want to study may confuse you.  Let me clarify subject, course and module.

What Is A Subject?

A subject is an area of study, e.g. English, Economics or Physics. Such a subject may be available for study at various levels e.g. at school, for a degree and for postgraduates studies.

Subjects that you select for a degree may be taken at first-year level and also up to a second and third-year level.  If you take a subject up to the third year level, we call it a “major” subject for short.  We may even call it a “specialization” for your degree.

A Course? A Module?

Previously we distinguished between the different year levels of study, e.g. in English, by taking about a “first-year course” in English.  However, now these courses have been broken up into smaller study units, which we now call modules.  So a module is simply a single (smaller) study unit and a degree is built up by a number of modules, for example a B.Com degree has 32 modules.

To make things interesting, we distinguish between semester modules and year modules.  Most modules are semester modules, except for those in the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Education, which are year modules.

What Is Semester Then?

What divide the year into two parts for purposes of registering, studying and writing examinations?  One can register half-yearly for degrees in all the Faculties, except Education and Science.  Accordingly semester modules can be taken for semester 1. (The first part of the year) and/or for semester 2. (the second part of the years).

What About Years Modules?

Year modules are mostly relevant for qualifications or subjects offered by the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Science.
